Firenze!
As my first entry, what better to talk about that the city itself, Firenze! Walking around it quickly become clear what is meant by open-air museum; everywhere I look there is art and it’s all so diverse. Florence is the capital of the Tuscany region and the famous center of the Renaissance. Florence started as a Roman settlement and grew over time, eventually becoming one of the most influential cities in the Italian region after the defeat of its main rival, Pisa. Today, Florence is a tourism, fashion, and art capital in the western world.
Florence is host to many famous churches and galleries. The Duomo is perhaps the most remarkable of the churches with its dome towering over the city. The Uffizi gallery contains many famous paintings by the Renaissance greats such as The Birth of Venus by Boticelli and the iconic David by Michelangelo is only a few miles away in the Galleria dell’Accademia. The Arno river splits the city with bridges connecting the two halves, the most notable being the Ponte Vecchio. The “Old Bridge” was constructed back in the Roman times and now houses many jewelers and art dealers. Florence is filled with culture and history and I look forward to exploring this incredible city.
