Capri
The first stop on my tour of the Amalfi Coast was the incredible island of Capri. After about a 50 minute ferry ride over, I landed on the island. It felt so very different there than anywhere else I have been; the buildings had a very distinct style, the cliffs were so large and detailed, and the water was so clear and blue. We took a tour of the island on boat and got to see many interesting caves but unfortunately the Blue Grotto was closed due to the weather. Afterwards I had an amazing seafood dish on the rocky beach and walked around the shops the rest of the day as it got very rainy and cold.
Capri began as a small Greek settlement but it quickly grew after Caesar Augustus traded Ischia for the land. As time passed, Capri had to deal with sparse natural resources and Muslim and pirate attacks which took its toll on the city’s population and power. Eventually Capri landed back on its feet again as the French completed fortifications on the island in 1815. Capri continued to grow and gained reputation as many famous writers, artists and poets moved onto the island. Today Capri is a tourist capital and attracts many foreigners each year with its unique splendor.
